Hiring a Superuser Could Prevent Your Next Big Software Project Fail

Hiring a Superuser Could Prevent Your Next Big Software Project FailHiring a Superuser Could Prevent Your Next Big Software Project FailHiring a Superuser Could Prevent Your Next Big Software Project Fail RossheimWhen a software project fails, it can casta long shadow of remorse across the organization. Unfortunately, for many companies, that failure is all-too-familiar.In fact a large fraction of enterprise resource planning (ERP), customer relationship management (CRM) and other software projects either completely bomb or dont reach some of their objectives. According to a Deloitte white paper citing analyst firm Gartners data, between 55 percent and 75 percent of them fall flat. One way to avoid this type of disaster is to recruit the kinds of folks who serve as systembetreuer glue for these complex projects. These root-userstypically business analysts or project managers who take on a liaison role with ITcan make all the difference between software project failure and success. So h ow can you recruit and groom these kinds of folks? Unfortunately, there are no shortcuts to building a talent pipeline of ERP superusers, says Lisa Anderson, president of LMA Consulting Group, Inc., which consults large corporations on supply chain management. As the experts below point out, building a superuser pipeline requires creativity and persistence. But thoseefforts will ultimatelyprovide a significant payoff. After all, your superusers will serve as a critical bridge between the user and all the other stakeholders on an enterprise software implementation.Open the gates to let superuser talent in. The next time youre sourcing business analysts andprogram managers, include superuser aptitude in the target skill set in the job description. Szofer, CEO of software services firm SenecaGlobal, explains why.Oracle, Salesforce, SAPtheyre fairly sophisticated, so a lot of knowledge is needed to configure the system. If someone is in the scheduling department for a large manufacturer and theyre working on the capacity of machines that are producing goods for Costco, thats a steep learning curve, because ERP is pretty complicated, he says.Attract potential superusers with your employer brand. If your company does peer interviews, be sure to include a superuser who can speak with candidates about the role. Or consider highlighting that employee in a video on your company career page. There are different definitions of who superusers are and what they do, says Jan Meyer, global head of digital learning solutions at SAP. So codify what you need from your superusers and widely communicate the nature and importance of the role internally and in your recruitment communications. In interviews, probe for the candidates superuser interests. A superuser can make the difference between a rocky release and a smooth one. Superusers help us with roll out and hand holding, and help usget product feedback, says Meyer. Is the candidate up for the task of being the conduit? You canno t work with 10,000 end users, but if you have a handful of locations with one or two superuser representatives in each area, you can work with them.Test the candidates ability to speak up for a peer community. Superusers will be called upon to speak for their peer users, who will likely be less familiar with your organizationsenterprise software. The superuser takes on the role of speaking up for the nave user, says Anderson. Whether theyre business analysts or project or program managers, superusers need to empathize with newbies. Be sure to look for soft skills in the candidates you select.Assess candidates ability to aid in software training. Superusers are a key for us in training, says Meyer. Superusers will spend their days on your ERP system, so look for people with experience in training, whether as training leaders or as peer trainers.Superusers want to keep learning. A great way tosuccessfully recruit promising superuser candidates is to appeal to their ambition. Superusers are typically interested in the training, says Anderson. They see that they could go somewhere else someday if they want to.By keeping ambitious people on the cutting edge of technology, even if theyre not technologists, helps boost retentionas well.Superusers must have a gut feeling for process. These two key qualifications will enable you to recruit superusers a knack for business processes and the ability to suss out new features. It doesnt really matter if you have experience in the system at hand, says Anderson. You need someone like a business analyst with a good process understanding, someone who can figure out how to do additional things with the system without too much help.Management should scout for internal superuser talent. Beyond your external searches, leaders should keep their eye out for emerging superuser talent within the companysomeone who understands down-the-line impacts, is willing to speak up, and enjoys being a change agent, says Anderson.Give them opportuni tieswhile making sure to provide security in their day-to-day job responsibilities. Presenting the superuser role as a professional development opportunity will also help support employee retention.Compensate superusers for their above-and-beyond efforts. If you love your superusers, retain them by rewarding them for their industriousness. Its good to have financial rewards like a bonus at certain milestones, says Anderson. And its good to keep those superusers in your employrather than lose them to the greener pastures of your competitors.

Why your cold can feel worse in the summer

Why your cold can feel worse in the summerWhy your cold can feel worse in the summerIf you are currently battling the sniffles on a beautiful summer day, you may feel especially miserable right now. Somehow, the idea of sneezing and coughing all day long seems mora manageable when there is an inhospitable blizzard outside your room. The reason why your summer cold feels worse than a winter cold is more psychological than biological, experts say.If you feel lonely during a summer cold, the symptoms will feel worseHow you think can change how you feel. If youre the only one of your friend group to get sick in the summer, it can feel socially isolating to watch them enjoy the beach and sunlight from your window. That may be why your cold feels particularly unbearable during the summer months of socializing than in the months of winter hibernation. One study found that lonelier people feel worse when they have colds then less lonely people. It makes sense that if you think everyone you kn ow is at the beach or outside doing enjoyable things and youre stuck in your room for a week, that could heighten perceptions of loneliness and perception of cold symptom severity, Chris Fagundes, one of the authors of the study, said. How you defeat this cold is the same, regardless of what month it is. Lots of hand washing, minimize touching your own eyes or mouth, Dr. Cameron Wolfe, an infectious disease specialist at Duke University School of Medicine advised. Stay away from sick people and, if youre sick, stay away from others who might be more at risk of severe illness than you.

Internship Programs that Cultivate Future Employees

Internship Programs that Cultivate Future EmployeesInternship Programs that Cultivate Future EmployeesInternship Programs that Cultivate Future Employees ChildersWith more companies competing for the best talent, its never been more important for businesses to create a solid in eigener sacheship program to attract the next generation of corporate trailblazers.Across industries, interns are hired with an eye toward cultivating future staff and recruiting college graduatesto the corporate world. Are you looking to start your own successful internship program? Consider these best practices from companies whose internship programs are deeply integrated into their corporate culture.Setting a High Bar for InternsAll of our hiring managers interview and assess internsin the saatkorn manner as potential full-time employees, says Marie-Therese Ellis, University Relations manager for Brocade, an industry leader in high-performance network solutions. In addition to hiring college juniors and seni ors for summer internships, Brocade recently introduced an internship program where students can work on a part-time basis for 8-12 weeks during the school year.Provide Interns with GuidanceJawbone, a world-leader in consumer technology and wearable devices, requires internal teams who request interns show they have the time and dedication to create and help drive a meaningful project for the student. This includes assigning a manager and a mentor, weekly one-on-one meetings with the intern to monitor progress and celebrating milestones, says Drew McGuire, head of University Programs at Jawbone in San Francisco, Calif.Recruit WiselyAs the process for recruiting talented interns has become more competitive, companies are utilizing a variety of strategies including social media, networking, and college recruitingto attract students. We look for interns who demonstrate initiative, an eagerness to learn, a willingness to work hard and who show the potential for leadership, Ellis says. Oft en its hard to distinguish those qualities on paper, so a face-to-face interview is key.Jawbone forgoes the traditional college career fairs, preferring to attend campus Hackathons and other student-led activities to recruit interns.Hold Orientations and TrainingA successful intern program should provide plenty of training and supervision. We have a kick-off reception for our interns where one of our executives discusses our corporate culture and the expectations we have for our employees, Ellis says. In addition, they attend the saatkorn orientation as our full-time employees. At Brocade, weekly social and professional network meetings are held where interns hear from executives in different departments. As a result, interns gain a better understanding of the overall company.AllowInterns to ContributeProviding your interns with meaningful work gives them the opportunity to make meaningful contributions to your company.Ellis says that Brocade interns work on projects that have the abi lity to influence company processes, and receive constructive feedback from their manager and team, as well as a mentor for extra guidance and support. We have many interns who come up with innovative ideas and deliverables during their internship that are immediately implemented into the company, Ellis says.At the end of their internship, students give a company-wide presentation, showing what they accomplished during the program, McGuire says.Plan Activities That Go Beyond WorkSocial perks are another draw for companies who are hoping to lure top students to their companies as summer interns. They also serve to ensure that students have an enjoyable and memorable internship experience. In addition to being paid at the same market rate as Bay Area technology companies, both Brocade and Jawbone offer interns the same benefits and perks as full-time staff, including vacation pay. Most interns receive health coverage through their parents plans. At Jawbone, interns are invited to attend the same company-wide events, parties, celebrations, and sporting leagues, as the companys 450 staff members, including social and networking events including scavenger hunts, Giants baseball games, and picnics and barbeques, and a speaker series. In 2014, the company held their first Intern Product Design contest, where interns were asked to brainstorm and pitch a new product idea to a panel of employees. The winning team was given tickets to the Outside Lands concert event in San Francisco.Interns and your Talent PipelineIf your company plans to use the internship program to drive new graduate hiring, use evaluations from managers to assess whether the intern would be a good match for your company. At minimum, be sure to maintain contact with the student and make a job offer as soon as possible, since many of todays students receive multiple job offers upon graduation.Throughout the internship experience, both Jawbone and the intern are able to assess if this is the right place for them to begin their career after they graduate, McGuire says. High performing interns are automatically considered for new graduate positions, and we often create new positions just to hire them.

Your career hot streak can happen at anytime, study finds

Your career hot streak can happen at anytime, study findsYour career hot streak can happen at anytime, study findsWhen we watch colleagues get on a roll and produce hit after hit, we may watch from the sidelines wondering exactly how they did it. A new paper published in Nature explained some of the science behind career hot streaks, which the researchers defined as a specific period during which an individualsperformance is substantially better than his or her typicalperformance.Hot streaks are randomDashun Wang and his colleagues analyzed the career histories of about 30,000individual artists, film directors, and scientists and used popular metrics of success likeauction prices of artwork, the IMDB.com film ratings, and the number of publication citations to determine a worker on a hot streak. They found that hot streaks usually happen for around four to five years. The good news is that if you have not had your hot streak yet, it could still happen because the zeiteinteilung of ho t streaks is random. If the hot streak occurs randomly within a career, and the highest impact works are statisticallymore likely to appear within a hot streak, then the timing of the highest impact works is also random, the study concluded.Productivity did not affect the likelihood of a person catching a hot streak, suggesting that popular success can be completely random. One thing that is for sure to get on a career hot streak, you have to keep producing work. You cannot catch a hot streak if you are not working towards one.Although older people are less likely to produce breakthroughs than their younger counterparts, this isnt because age and creativity are intertwined, Wang said. Its simply because not enough people keep plugging along late in their careers. If we keep producing, our own hot streak may still be ahead, just out of sight.

Best Practices for Marketing Professionals

Best Practices for Marketing Professionals Best Practices for Marketing Professionals Here are some considerations and best practices to think about in relation to your career in absatzwirtschaft.Think like your Client The fruchtwein important long term strategy for a marketing professional to advance their career is to always think like your client. Many times, digital agencies and even internal in-house marketers feel that their interests are not well-alignedwith the department or company paying the bill for the campaign. For example, digital agencies need to be compensated on total spend, not performance, and in-house marketers are dependent on internal budgets to execute their jobs effectively. Its easy to feel that your success is more about your personal career than the success of your marketing campaigns and initiatives. Remember to constantly inspect the performance of your marketing initiatives themselves gauge yourself on this metric, not on whether or not you just recei ved a promotion or bonus.Find Your Ideal Customer This is commonsense advice, but when youre putting together print ads or a marketing pitch, it can go much more smoothly if you imagine that you are talking to just one person. Take the time to figure out who is the ideal person to help you achieve your goals. Who can facilitate the changes you want to binnensee within a company? Who will be buying the product or using the service that you are marketing? Armed with the idea of your ideal person, you can focus your marketing efforts. But additionally, know the ideal customers that you know best. For example, if youve had success marketing to CIOs or perhaps mobile consumers in the state of Georgia, understand that success as a real career skill. Leverage each past customer success in your new campaigns, and try to constantly expose yourself to new customer demographics and target markets.Dont Get ComplacentIt can be nice to have a solid position with great benefits and a regular paych eck, but that cushy job in marketing can lead to complacency and a decline in skills if youre not careful. While you may impress your boss by not questioning the accepted ways of doing things and being competent but boring, you will be doing your marketing career a disservice. In order to stay fresh in your career and push the envelope to get outstanding results, sometimes you have to question orders and shake things up. If you are not constantly taking on new challenges, getting exposure to new clients and markets, it may be time for a new position. The key to understanding complacency is to judge your learning experience, not your salary or job. If you arent constantly learning, your marketing skills will decay.Take Risks Many marketing campaigns flop because the professionals running them are afraid of failure, and so they wont take a risk on a new technique. You cant just use the same old tricks over and over again. Sometimes you have to try new things and take risks in order to succeed. Dont let the fear of failure hamstring you in your marketing efforts- try something new Even if you fail, you can learn from the experience. Try to work controlledfailure into your corporate planning. Take small, measured, and controlled risks and then use the data to make smarter decisions. A long term successful career in marketing is usually paved with lots of small failures.Avoid Analysis-Paralysis Having solid industry analysis, models and metrics can be a great thing, but dont get locked up analyzing a market or a problem to death. If you over-think a problem, you cant move forward and find a solution. While its great to have the fruchtwein up-to-date information and to thoroughly think through a situation, you need to give yourself to make a decision and take action. Bleeding-edge marketing techniques are of course not always recommended, but forcing yourself to be entirely data-dependent and analytical will block out many new and effective methods and mediums.Keep Learning The marketing industry is always changing and evolving, and if you cant keep up with current trends, you will be left behind. You have to keep learning to stay fresh in marketing, and not just about marketing topics. Read, research, seek out new knowledge, follow your interests- just keep learning so that you can stay interested and develop your career.Marketing can and should be one of the most dynamic professions. You have the chance to effect consumer behavior, model the growth of companies, shape industry demand, and think about basic human emotions and needs. With careful planning and calculated risk taking, your career in marketing will always keep you interested and taking on new challenges and opportunities.

Can Dating Help you Professionally

Can Dating Help you Professionally Can Dating Help you Professionally From an infographic from SparkHire, we’ve recently discovered the parallels between speed dating and interviewing- both activities seek to find “the one,” whether it be personally or professionally. Yet, although Valentine’s Day has come and gone, we can still learn a thing or two from the romantic holiday, and Sparks is giving us the opportunity to do just that. Checkout what he had to tell Recruiter.com readers about the correlation between increasing your social skills, e.g. via a dating coach, and moving forward in your career: Nick Sparks 1. How long have you been a social and dating coach? How long has Sparks of Attraction been in business? I’ve been a dating coach now for just over 6 years and, after working jointly with business partners, have been focused of my own venture- Sparks of Attraction/Fearless Coaching for about 6 months. 2. About how many clients have you had since Sparks of Attraction opened? Over the past six years I’ve worked with around 200 men. 3. Please briefly explain your process at Sparks of Attraction. After a brief application process, my time with my clients begins with an intense four-day clinic in which I basically “reprogram” their brains when it comes to socializing and women. This involves classroom sessions, drills with our female assistants in which their conversational flaws are highlighted and removed, and monitored time at the bar in which they practice their newly budding skills on real live women. This clinic is then followed by a month of focused follow-up work and a lifetime of support. 4. Do you see a correlation between developing social skills (i.e. for dating) and advancing in your career? Absolutely. Only a small percentage of what we teach is focused on communicating with women. Being a confident and charismatic man is universal, regardless of who you are interacting with. Because of this, it’s not surprising that many of my past clients report success in their professional life directly because of the program. Some examples of clients who have experienced this correlation include: One client, a gentlemen in his 30’s who works in medical sales, reported a 50 percent increase in his business two months after beginning his work with me. Another past client, a recent college grad, told me that he would never have gotten his current job without putting these skills to work on the networking scene. Another past client, previously stuck in the same position at work for years, told me about a promotion he received to management in the month following his clinic. He told me people at work just started treating him differently. This list goes on and on. 5. Why is developing social skills important overall? For better or worse, human beings evolved as a social species. There are very few aspects of your life, especially your professional life, that don’t directly involve social interaction. It’s impossible to be good at just about any job without being good with people. 6. Final thoughts? Like it or not, your ability to get, maintain, and advance in your career is not solely dependent on your abilities related to that profession, it is also equally, if not more so tied to your social skills. When you interview for that position and are up against dozens of other applicants with similar qualifications; the decision will be made on who they like the most. Luckily, this is something that can be developed and improved like any other skill in your life. Have you given it proper priority?
